[unixODBC-support] Convert or not convert.. (SQL Server]Error converting characters)

I've got some:
DBD::ODBC::st execute failed: [FreeTDS][SQL Server]Error converting characters into server's character set. Some character(s) could not be converted (SQL-HY000)
on a number or records from a batch INSERT.
Is there a way to NOT trying to convert anything, but just INSERT strings as is ? These strings are received from official WHOIS databases like APNIC. Not sure if there is a consistent character set (like UTF-8), or if these WHOIS databases themselves have stored strings as were received and serve the same bits.
In the meantime I'm going through this very detailed thread on the topic, http://grokbase.com/t/perl/dbi-users/099xhsp99e/dbd-odbc-and-character-sets but things may have changed since..
Thank you!
