Setting the "CFLAGS" value helped a lot - but now we're getting an error
during the "config" process about the C Compiler.

Here's what I think were the relevant lines from the config.log:

-----------------------------------------

configure:2111: checking for gcc

configure:2127: found /usr/bin/gcc

configure:2137: result: gcc

configure:2381: checking for C compiler version

configure:2384: gcc --version </dev/null >&5

configure:2387: $? = 0

configure:2389: gcc -v </dev/null >&5

Using built-in specs.

Target: x86_64-redhat-linux

Configured with: ../configure --prefix=/usr --mandir=/usr/share/man
--infodir=/usr/share/info --enable-shared --enable-threads=posix
--enable-checking=release --with-system-zlib --enable-__cxa_atexit
--disable-libunwind-exceptions --enable-libgcj-multifile
--enable-languages=c,c++,objc,obj-c++,java,fortran,ada
--enable-java-awt=gtk --disable-dssi --enable-plugin

gcc version 4.1.2 20080704 (Red Hat 4.1.2-48)

configure:2392: $? = 0

configure:2394: gcc -V </dev/null >&5

gcc: '-V' option must have argument

configure:2397: $? = 1

configure:2420: checking for C compiler default output file name

configure:2423: gcc m32 conftest.c >&5

gcc: m32: No such file or directory

configure:2426: $? = 1

configure: failed program was:

configure:2465: error: C compiler cannot create executables

See `config.log' for more details.

-----------------------------------------

It looks to me like we need to have the C compiler package reinstalled
on the box - most likely using the "CFLAGS" setting.

Does that sound right - or might there be something else that needs to
be done - like some additional parm's in the config string?
